Delilah Green Doesn’t Care Book Review

2026 Reading Challenge 3 of 24: A book with a queer protagonist

Delilah Green Doesn’t Care is a sapphic romance by Ahsley Herring Blake.

We follow Delilah Green, who comes back to her hometown after many years to be the photographer for her stepsister Astrid’s wedding. She runs into Claire, one of Astrid’s longtime best friends, and the two slowly fall for one another.

It’s hard to root for a main character when they suck. And Delilah kind of sucks. She’s in her thirties, but still manages to have the personality of an edgy teenager. Everything has to be met with a snarky comment or insincerity, which is obnoxious and grating. How can I feel empathetic for her being the black sheep when this is how off-putting she is? I get why people might want to keep their distance from her.

That being said though, I thought her interactions with Claire’s daughter Ruby were cute. Encouraging her art and photography interests. Lifting her up and helping her express herself. This is the Delilah I wish we saw more of.

Delilah and Claire’s relationship is underdeveloped— there were things I liked, but I wanted more. I’m expected to believe they fall in love after hanging out and hooking up a few times over the course of two weeks? I’m not buying it, but I’ll give them the honeymoon phase pass.

The moments they do share together I wish were more fleshed out so their relationship could have been more believable. On the only date we see them go on, they go to a skating rink. Cute. That lasts about a page and a half, and then we get four pages of sex. Bummer.

Overall, I think I wanted more character development, but the book did still have some enjoyable moments. This one might not have fully been my cup of tea, but I will definitely be picking up more novels by this author.

If you’re looking for a sapphic romance that leans more toward the “spicy” end of the romance spectrum, Delilah Green Doesn’t Care is a decent choice.
